Why are Tanzanians protesting?
Protesters were disappointed in the general election, which saw the two main opposition presidential candidates barred from running.
In response to the unrest, the government imposed a curfew, shut down the internet, and deployed the military.
It should be noted that the main opposition leader, Tundu Lissu of the Chadema party, was in prison on disputed charges of treason, and his party boycotted the election.
The candidate of the second largest opposition party, Luhaga Mpina, was also disqualified for technical reasons.
After all these atrocities, it became clear that Suluhu had a strong chance of winning the presidential election, and critics claimed that the ruling party (CCM) had organized a coronation ceremony instead of a legitimate election.
