Photos shared by Y News showed mourners hugging each other, their eyes filled with grief as they approached the casket containing the remains of the 29-year-old man.

Her father, deeply heartbroken, stood silently by the casket, occasionally wiping away tears as he received condolences from friends and well-wishers.

Outside the funeral home, friends gathered in small groups, sharing memories and comforting each other.

Mourners described the sight as “heartbreaking,” with many struggling to reconcile the image of the smiling young man they once knew with the tragedy of his final appearance.

As the hearse prepared to leave Montezuma for its final resting place, sobs filled the air, outbursts of love, pain, and distrust.

Kimani Mbugua’s story of perseverance and redemption

The brilliant and talented story teller, who rose to fame as a journalist in Citizen TV and later in NTVwas remembered for her beauty, warmth, and infectious optimism.

However, his qualities faded very early due to the difficult conditions of life, after which he entered a dark phase that he never left.

Kimani’s death has touched the hearts of many Kenyans who followed his journey from the peak of his journalism career to his public struggle with mental illness and efforts to recover.

Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Kimani has in recent years bravely shared her battle with mental health, encouraging open conversation about a topic often shrouded in stigma.

How Kimani Mbugua died

After receiving help from good people, including the former governor of Nairobi Mike SonkoKimani was admitted to a rehabilitation center in Mombasa.

He was discharged in December 2024 after nearly six months of treatment. In his own words, Kimani talked about rediscovering his faith and finding purpose again.

“I changed my love for drugs to love God,” he said then, promising to dedicate his second chance in life to serving others.

But on a day that was supposed to mark his full recovery, grief took over when the young man was found dead in his room at the facility.

Kimani’s story, once a beacon of hope for many, now serves as a reminder to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of kindness for those who quietly struggle with inner storms.
