Evans Ouma, who was Raila’s official photographer between 2015 and 2018, has shared touching memories of his time with the former prime minister.
How did Raila Odinga’s former photographer remember him?
In an interview with Citizen TV, the photographer described his former boss who died as humble and had a touch with ordinary citizens.
Ouma said his aim was to capture Raila’s moments with the people.
“He was a man of the people. Whenever I went to campaign with him, I always tried to capture his relationship with the crowd, how his presence made people feel,” Ouma said.

Ouma also revealed that the late former prime minister never allowed him to take pictures while giving aid.
“Whenever he gave someone money or help, he didn’t want pictures taken. He didn’t do it for show; he did it from the heart,” he said.
The young photographer said the 2017 general election campaigns were some of the most intense moments of his career.
“That was one of the most exciting campaigns I’ve ever covered. Photographing Jakom as a presidential candidate was a dream,” he remembered.
Raila’s presidential portrait
He recalled the presidential photo on Capitol Hill of Raila. That photo gave birth to the photo, which was to be used as his official portrait if he became president after the 2017 election.
“We were prepared. That was supposed to be an official photo,” he said.
Furthermore, Ouma recalled one of the most historic moments after the High Court annulled the results of the 2017 presidential election. Raila had never looked happier, according to him.
“I have never seen him so happy. Jakom was shaking his fists, laughing, and hugging everyone, saying that democracy has finally won,” Ouma said.
