Nairobi – The interim leader of the ODM party, Oburu Oginga, has called an emergency meeting of the top leaders of the party a few days after the funeral of his brother, Raila Amollo Odinga.

The meeting of the ODM Central Management Committee is expected to be held on Monday, October 27, as rumors increase about the cabinet changes expected to be made by the President William Ruto.

Has Oburu Oginga called an ODM meeting?

Speaking on Citizen TV on Thursday, October 23, the deputy leader of ODM who is also the Governor of Mombasa, Abdulswamad Nassir, said that the important meeting will be chaired by Oburu.

Among the things that will be discussed at the session are the upcoming by-elections, the 20th anniversary of ODM, and the 10-point agenda signed between UDA and ODM.

Nasir said:

“We will have a special session of the Central Committee which will be chaired by Oburu Oginga on Monday, with three main agendas to focus on the upcoming by-elections, to celebrate 20 years of ODM where we will remember the 80 years we had with our late leader Raila Odinga, and to discuss the 10-point agenda signed between UDA and ODM.”

Is there a division within the ODM party?

The crucial session comes as senior party officials are divided over whether to support a coalition government beyond 2027.

However, Nassir said the meeting will be an opportunity for the party to reassess its direction and maintain its unity following the political divisions that emerged after Raila’s death.

The governor of Mombasa expressed hope that the party will remain united towards the 2027 elections despite the pressure from outside.

Nasir said:

“Our opponents want to see us fall, but we will meet to decide the way forward and resolve the ideological differences that have begun to appear.”

The session is being held amid political tension fueled by rumors of a cabinet reshuffle, which analysts say has cross-purposes.

The important session comes at a time when divisions are increasingly emerging about the future of the Orange party towards the 2027 General Election.

Some leaders have come out openly to announce their support for the campaign for Ruto’s return to power, while another group led by the Secretary General Edwin Sifuna insisting that the party will have its own presidential candidate.

Amid the divisions, Ruto’s close allies have called for Sifuna to be removed from his influential position, accusing him of being a spy for the opposition of the new unity.

This session also comes amid allegations that the president is planning to secure control of the former prime minister’s political strongholds.
