Raila Odinga: Gachagua’s friend explains why the former DP did not attend the funeral of the ODM leader

The former deputy president disappeared in Nyayo field during the national funeral of the late ODM leader.

Some Kenyans criticized Gachagua for being the only opposition leader to skip Raila’s funeral.

However, Thang’wa strongly defended Gachagua, calling his decision a deliberate display of competence and emotional intelligence.

“Kenya does not stop when Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua chooses to remain silent; it listens more closely. His absence from Father’s farewell was not an act of defiance, weakness, or guilt. It was a deliberate display of leadership, emotional intelligence, and great respect for a time that was bigger than politics,” Thang’wa said.

According to the Kiambu senator, Gachagua never wanted his presence in Nyayo to change the direction of the day.

Thang’wa claimed the speakers would shift their focus from Raila’s legacy to endless political interpretations of his existence.

“It is because of that status that he chose not to attend the public farewell ceremony. Gachagua understands his power and weight. He knows that his presence alone would change the face of the day, shifting the focus from Raila Odinga’s legacy to the endless political interpretations and speculations about his every move. The day was not about politics, alliances, or Kenyan competition,” it was about the history of Kenya.

“By choosing to go back, Gachagua made sure that the spotlight remains where it belongs, on Baba’s journey, his sacrifice and his contribution. That decision was not evasive. It was maturity. It is a kind of quiet leadership that puts the nation before the individual, and shortly before the microphone,” he added.

Thang’wa, a close associate of the former vice president, argued that the fact that Kenyans spent so much time discussing Gachagua’s absence showed that he has more influence in the country.

“The fact that the country spent more time discussing who was not present at Nyayo Stadium than who was present is proof of the importance of the Deputy President nationally. Gachagua does not need to stand at every stage to be at the center of the story. His leadership speaks for itself, and even in silence, the nation feels his presence,” he said.
