Oburu, the Siaya senator and Raila’s brother, arrived at the old man’s house there Bondo while in the chopper, a few minutes after 4 pm on Thursday, October 16.
In Luo culture, the family member of the deceased should officially inform the family about the death of their loved one before burial arrangements begin.
During the televised announcement, Oburu revealed that Raila will be buried next to their parents as per his wish.
During Oburu’s speech, Betty Orengo, wearing a colorful turban, who was standing next to him, was seen wiping away tears.
Later, the heartbroken Siaya governor’s wife offered her condolences to Raila and admitted that no one can wear his shoes.
“This is the man who sacrificed his personal freedom, family ties so that he could fight for Kenya. My relationship with him and his beloved wife and their family has gone through the course of struggle, especially the struggle to get a better Kenya… he has no substitute. We will learn and continue in the lessons he taught us,” he said while talking to NTV.
When asked about their last conversation, Orengo’s wife said:
“The last conversation we had was about our Siaya International Trade and Investment Conference (SITICO 2025), which was to be held today, Octoba 16. That’s what we talked about at the end, and he was interested in the role I was playing in the meeting.”
Betty said that she and Raila spoke more often, sharing that she had a lot to remember about Raila.
“He was full of love. He was a loving and kind person, and he showed that in so many ways. For example, if you were bereaved, he would be the first person to call you, if you had love and his devotion to Kenyans tended to take away some kind of appreciation for how much he also loved his friends. It hurts,” an emotional Betty shared.
