Opoda Farm Employee Tells How He Served the Late Raila Odinga’s Family for 25 Years

A woman from Siaya, who has worked for more than two decades in the Odinga family’s farm in Opoda, showed great sadness when she recalled her good time while working for them.

Joan Atieno could not hide her pain when she recounted the good time she had while working for the Odinga family in their rural farm in Opoda, where the politician is expected to be buried on Sunday, October 19.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Atieno who looked sad said Raila’s death has been difficult for him because to him, he was like a father.

“I’m sorry for mother Ida. It’s been 25 years now since I started working for them. He was a father to me, and even more than a father. I was the first to see him in the morning and the last in the evening. It’s a great loss. May God rest his soul in heaven,” he said.

His colleague Boniface also remembered Raila as his father.

“My name is Boniface Odhiambo Oginga. In fact, it was my father who gave me the name Oginga. I came here about 18 years ago. He was my father. When I came I knew nothing, but he taught me everything. His death has really shocked me. I can’t believe it. I pray to God to rest his soul in peace. I apologize to mother Ida. Here at home we don’t live like workers, we live like their children,” he said.

Boniface said he is still struggling to accept Raila’s death and made a request to the President William Ruto“Please Mr. President, we ask you to take care of mother Ida, just like you were Raila’s friend. Take care of her and us too, don’t forget us,” he pleaded.

Opoda employees apply for government jobs

Boniface asked the president to also give them jobs in the government so that they do not feel abandoned.

“If there is a position in the government, please remember us. We also want to get something from the government because now he (Ruto) has remained like our father,” he said. The request was supported by his colleague Patrick, who said that getting a job in the government will help ease the pain of losing Raila.” said Patrick.

On Friday, October 17, Raila’s national funeral service was held at Nyayo Stadium, where his family and prominent leaders paid their last respects.

Two people were reported to have died after violence broke out in the stadium.
