Understand the case against Lissu
Lissu’s treason case comes a few weeks before the Tanzanian general election is expected to take place on Wednesday, October 29.
His Chadema party has been barred from contesting and leaving the President’s Revolutionary Party (CCM) Samia Solution Hassan unchanged.
The opposition leader, who took second place in the 2020 presidential race, has long accused the government of running the electoral process to maintain the CCM position.
The prosecution claims that Lissu incited public rebellion through his April speech, urging Tanzanians to reject what he called the electoral process.

According to CNBC Africa, Lissu pleaded not guilty, with his legal team insisting that the charges are political and are scheduled to silence opponents before the election.
Chadema spokesman said the court had banned the proclamation of the case directly at the request of the prosecution, due to the protection of the witnesses.
Only a few journalists and family members were allowed to enter the full court room. Outside, police dispersed a crowd of supporters gathered to show solidarity with the opposition leader.
