Eliud Lagat: DIG is facing controversy making a surprise visit to 2 police stations

Thursday quiet in Kitui and Machakos turned out to be incidents when Deputy Inspector General of the Kenyan Police Service, Eliud Lagat, appeared unannounced at two local police stations.

The surprise visits on August 14 took him to the first, then Matuu, where he inspected the equipment and spoke directly to the officers.

According to the national police service, the trip was part of Lagat’s ongoing work assessment in different regions.

At both centers, he visited key areas including the Report Office, the Children’s Office and Gender, Cell, the Anti -Crime Unit, the Directorate of the Criminal Investigation (DCI), the Traffic Office, and the Police Studies.

He took a while to interact with the officers, congratulating them on their expertise, diligence, and dedication to serve the public.

What did Lagat tell the officers during the surprise visit?

Lagat also addressed officials about the importance of promoting mental health, excellent conditions for well -being, and maintaining integrity.

He wanted them to maintain discipline, cooperation and professionalism while treating the public in person.

“Dig called on officials to maintain high levels of discipline, joint performance and professionalism while showing humanity in their responsibilities. He urged them to be role models and to encourage their peers and communities,” The National Police Service (NPS) said in a post.

The visit has come at a time sensitive to the chief executive. Lagat was under close public supervision and media since the June death of the teacher and social mediator Albert Ojwang in detention.

Was Lagat involved in Ojwang’s suspicious death?

Ojwang allegedly published a scam content about Lagat, resulting in formal complaints.

He was later arrested and died under suspicion at Nairobi Police Station.

Although Lagat refused to be involved in Ojwang’s arrest, allegations of torture, or death, the call for his arrest grew from civil society, justice activists and political leaders.

He withdrew himself to allow an investigation of the Independent Police Authority (IPOA), which eventually removed him from direct involvement. Lagat resumed his duties on July 14.

Recent months have seen Kenyan police stations under investigation and in some cases, the burning of police stations.

Why was the Nyandarua police station set on fire?

In June, Ndunyu Njeru residents in Nyandarua set fire to their police station after three people suspected of being arrested.

The attack occurred just hours after the Minister of the Interior Kipchumba Murkomen Tell the police to use force against anyone who threatens police stations.
