Nakuru: 8 people die in an accident after a train hit a passenger bus

At least eight people have died and many others have been injured in a fatal accident in Naivasha on Thursday evening, August 7.

The accident happened after a train crashed into a bus transporting passengers, who are said to be employees of the Kenya Pipeline. They were heading home.

Eyewitnesses say the bus suffered a brake error while the driver was unaware of the approaching cargo train carrying the woven metal rolls.

Some said the accident happened in the evening of fog after heavy rains.

“Then it was too late as it seemed to fail the brakes when the car met the train,” one said.

The transported train hit the bus near the Morendat intersection, dragging it to 200 meters more.

Eight died instantly; They were sitting in a column corresponding to the driver’s seat.

The accident, which occurred around 11pm, caused a massive traffic jam on Naivasha‑ Kasarani and the Naivasha ‑ Railway, with officials at the Naivasha patrol station coming out to control the situation and remove the scene.

Naivasha unit commander Antony Keter confirmed the accident, saying the bodies were transported to the mortuary of Naivasha Hospital.

Also on the site there were service providers from the Kenyan Railway Agency and the Kenyan Red Cross.

The humanitarian organization confirmed that 24 people suffered serious injuries and were rushed to various hospitals around Naivasha for special treatment.

“Following an earlier bus accident in the Moredat Junction area, Naivasha, 24 people were injured. The Kenyan Red Cross, along with other staff, provided first aid, helped transfer to various hospitals and will provide psychological assistance to affected families. The scene has been removed by Kenyan police,” The agency said on X.

The Kenyan railway agency mourned with bereaved families.

It has called on drivers to be careful on railways and road junctions.

“We would like to apologize to the bereaved and wish them a quick recovery. The agency said.

The accident happened three days after another on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

About five people, including a newborn, died in a fatal road accident near Mbaruk in Gilgil. The accident involved many cars: Toyota Fielder, Trela, and Mercedes-Benz Actros.

A traffic control unit officer in the county Nakuru Allan Ogolla explained that the Toyota Fielder was trying to pass a number of cars when it collided face -to -face with a saloon car.

The effect caused the Fielder to move and hit the trailer, killing the five instantly.

The authorities suspected the deaths may have been the same family. Ogolla called on drivers to take more attention on busy highways to prevent such traumatic events.

The bodies were taken to the mortuary for identification, and an investigation into the accident was ongoing.
