For Amos Simiyu, the act of compassion turned into a multi -year -old nightmare that robbed him of freedom, respect, and time he could not bring it back.

In 2017, life had already attacked Simiyu with a major blow.
He had lost his whole family during a severe post -election riot, when their lives were sadly after their house was burned.
How much money did Simiyu borrow a friend?
In his sadness, Simiyu held his faith, trying to resume in the quiet city of Bisil, Kajiado County.
In the midst of his loneliness, Simiyu stretched out a hand of support to a friend who had a problem. He borrowed KSh 86,000, largely for a man who was still rebuilding himself from the disaster.

But when it was time to pay, the friend turned out to be sharp.
“He not only refused to pay me, but he accused me of threatening life,” Simiyu remembers with sorrowful eyes.
How Simiyu was stressed
His world changed completely the day the police officers came to his door.
They had an identity that did not belong to him, and claimed that he had sent a threat message to the friend.
Simiyu, in surprise, tried to explain but was not heard.
He was arrested on charges of threatening to kill and pretend someone else.
When he was thrown, he went through the torture he called “cruel and torture.”
Alone and fearful, he was completely disappointed.

How long was Simiyu sentenced?
But the justice system was not sympathetic.
He expected maybe a one -year sentence, but Simiyu was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
“I felt like my soul left me,He said in a low voice.
Without an attorney, without help, and without a dependent family, he was forgotten within the justice system.

Years passed in silence and suffering. However, in prison, Simiyu continued to hold hope through prayer.
“I prayed every day for a miracle. That there was someone, somewhere, he would hear me,” He says.
The miracle came through one police officer, one of the few who listened and trusted him.
The officer, who was touched by Simiyu’s misery, offered to help him submit a free appeal.
Kajiado Supreme Court allows Simiyu’s appeal
When Simiyu was finally brought before the Kajiado Supreme Court, the judge reviewed his case and discovered something surprising: He had to serve only three years’ imprisonment.
But at that time, Simiyu had lived for more than 10 years in prison.
He was released, but with mental, emotional and spiritual injuries.
He has now returned to the community, trying to resume life, this trip from the ashes of violence.
“I forgave my friend. I was forced,” He says.
“But I hope one day the system will learn to listen. Because there are so many like me, they are still inside, praying for someone to trust them.”
