Nairobi – The National Police Service has provided traffic guidance before the African Nations (CHAN) 2024 football matches.

In a notice for newsrooms, Nairobi traffic commander Joseph Chirchir said three highways would be closed on Thursday, August 7.
CHAN 2024: What major roads will be closed on Thursday, August 7?
Harambee Stars will play Angola at Moi International Stadium, Kasarani, starting at 7pm.
According to Chirchir, the Aerodrome Road will be closed from Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
Drivers using the Lang’ata Road will be affected, as it will be closed on one side from the power circuit to the Lusaka circuit.
Kenyans using the Mombasa road will also be affected, as the busy road will be closed from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
The traffic chief has asked drivers from Mombasa Road to CBD to use the Likoni-Enterprise Road in General Motors and Southern Bypass in Olesereni.
Motorists from Langata Road to CBD have been encouraged to use the road to Raila Odinga or Muhoho Road in Mbagathi Roundabout Road.
Will drivers use Thika Road be affected?
Those drivers from Nairobi CBD to Thika Road-Ruiru-Juja-Hika will be required to use Limuru or Kiambu Road.
The traffic chief also encouraged public servants’ vehicles (PSV) transporting passengers to Kasarani Using Ruaraka Road Baba-Little.
Meanwhile, drivers from Thika Road to CBD will be required to use Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road or Limuru Road.
Additionally, the traffic chief said that on Thursday, August 7, motorists should avoid Thika Road unless they go to Kasarani Stadium for the Harambee Stars match.
Avoid Thika Road unless you travel to Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani Stadium.
The national police service works in partnership with relevant organizations to ensure free traffic flow. Additional police officers have been sent and will take strong action against anyone who violates traffic rules, ” It said the police statement in part.

Should Kenyans expect traffic interruptions during the CHAN tournament?
In a related context, the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) also provided public transport advice to passengers reaching airports within Nairobi.
At the notification, KAA said passengers traveling to and from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson airport should expect serious traffic interruptions.
According to the authority, the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) will contribute to disruption in the flow of cars.
KAA told its clients that the main roads in and out of the city would be completely closed or closed due to the security measures of the ongoing Chan 2024 competition.
President William Ruto praised the Moi International Sports Center for Kasarani, which was inspected in preparation for the Chan Group A schedule (including the Harambee Stars and the finals on August 30, 2025.
The stadium improvements guarantee obedience to CAF and FIFA standards for Chan 2024 and Afcon 2027.

Some Kenyans gathered on social networking pages to provide different views following traffic reports from police.
Some questioned why the police failed to specify the specific time that the roads would be closed and reopened.

Although this is important, why shut down the road on weekdays and fail to mention the time? The same board proposed the placement of a road fence on 7.7?
Law enforcement officers also faced criticism by choosing to close the key road on a weekday for a 90 -minute event, which they argued could continue without traffic interruption.

Closing the road is not a good strategy, it will bring a mess and traffic interruption. The best plan would have had a sufficient number of traffic officers on the road to ensure no restrictions and traffic flow is good.
However, police said the closure of the roads was necessary to assure all football stakeholders across the required security that met the standards set by the African Football Federation (CAF).
