The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has rolled out a new feature that allows individual taxpayers to access the iTax platform using their National Identity Card (ID) numbers – another step towards simplifying tax services and making them accessible.
In a Monday, August 4, press statement, the Authority referred to the upgrade as a strategic initiative aimed at improving service delivery and encouraging increased compliance with tax laws in Kenya.
“In a major step toward improving service delivery and encouraging tax compliance, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced the use of National Identity Card (ID) numbers as a new login option for individual users on the iTax platform,” the agency said.
Until now, iTax services were accessible via a Personal Identification Number (PIN). While that option still remains, the provision of ID login provides an alternative which is simpler and more familiar.
KRA said the change was driven by public feedback, with many Kenyans finding it easier to recall and use their ID numbers in everyday transactions.
The Authority added that the initiative aligns with its goal of making its tax system customer-centric through elimination of unnecessary boundaries in accessing digital services.
“By offering an option that aligns with users’ preferences and habits, KRA hopes to reduce friction in accessing services and promote greater uptake of digital tax services,” the statement read.
With iTax serving as the core platform for filing returns, making payments, and accessing tax compliance services, KRA believes simplifying access will lead to increased voluntary compliance.
“This development is a significant step toward removing barriers that discourage voluntary compliance,” KRA said. “KRA will continue to listen to taxpayers and make changes that reflect their needs and experiences.”
