A peaceful neighborhood in Mwabungo village, Ukunda, turned into the scene of a major police operation after detectives uncovered a hidden drug lab operating behind closed doors. Acting on days of surveillance and intelligence, officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit and Kenya Police raided a fortified one-acre compound suspected to house an illegal drug operation.
The team stormed the property, shielded by high walls and a guarded gate, and found a fully equipped lab stocked with chemicals and packaging materials labeled with names of well-known narcotics. The operation, police say, appeared to be highly organized and had likely been running for some time.
Authorities arrested two individuals at the scene: Gianardi Giulio, a 37-year-old Italian national, and Moses Nanoka Egadwa. Further investigations revealed parts of the compound that were being used to cultivate what is suspected to be cannabis.
The two suspects remain in police custody and will be charged in court.
The National Police Service has vowed to intensify its raids on drug trafficking cartels, citing the importance of ensuring the safety of Kenyan communities. The officers commended the Anti-Narcotics Unit for the work it is doing and urged the public to report any suspicious activity that would assist in combating the spread of illegal drugs.
