The Homa Bay County government has changed the names of some roads and gave them the names of prominent political leaders, a move that has created a mixed sense of congratulations and criticism from local residents.
According to the governor Gladys starchthe road name changing program followed a public participation exercise held in April 2025.
Wanga told TUKO.co.ke that the purpose of the exercise was to reflect the culture, heritage and contribution of the people who provided the most careful service to the county.
He said that residents were asked to submit nominal proposals as part of the process.
The governor also assured the public that their proposals would be considered to ensure that the names of the road in the Homa Bay city reflect the culture of the region, the history, and the values of the county.
“Road names are intended to honor prominent leaders, cultural areas or people who have made a significant contribution to county growth,” Starch said.
What leaders have their names used on Homa Bay roads?
Among the leaders who have now been given their names are:
Governor Gladys Starch
The late Kasipul MP Ong’ongo Were
The first governor of the Homa Bay Cyprian Awiti
Former Deputy Minister, the late Orwa Ojode
Although the Homa Bay County government emphasizes that the names are for recognizing the significant contribution of leaders to the development of the region, not everyone reaches the decision.
Michael Kojo, CEO of Asego Public Litigation Forum, criticized the attitude of favoring politicians in the name process.
“It is frustrating to see politicians being honored while our culture and historians are forgotten. This seems more like a political campaign than recognizing public contribution,” Kojo told TUKO.co.ke in an exclusive interview.
He said people like the Wahamba and Bunde, who have great historical and cultural significance, would be the best choice.
On the other hand, some community members have supported the move.
Homa Bay residents comment on new road names
Walter Opiyo, leader of Homa Bay Parliament of the country, said that the provision of names for the road would help in the navigation and planning of the city. He said that the move was delayed.
Local businesses have also enjoyed the change.
Geoffrey Okoth, representative of Homa Bay Giant Traders Association, said that road names will improve business identity.
