Kabuchai Member of Parliament Majimbo Kalasinga has accused Kenya Kwanza MPs of diverting funds raised through national empowerment programmes for personal gain. These programmes, currently being championed by pro-government lawmakers across the country, involve fundraisers targeting women and youth groups.

Speaking in his constituency on Sunday, July 13, 2025, during a similar event, Kalasinga issued a stern warning to the Kenya Kwanza MPs, urging them to stop misusing the programmes for self-enrichment.

He criticised the trend where women are invited to fundraising events, but after raising the money, the funds are neither distributed the same day nor the total amount raised during these events fully disclosed. He said the beneficiaries often wait for weeks, only to receive a fraction of what was raised.

Loosely translated as

“I want to give some advice regarding the ongoing empowerment programme in Kenya known as Women Empowerment. Do not use women as a means to access money for yourselves. You call them to attend events, they fill the venue, and you conduct fundraisers where a lot of money is raised — but you don’t distribute that money on the same day.”

Mama wanakaa nyumbani wanasoneneka baada ya wiki tatu mnawapea Miranda pesa ya cheque ya elfu 50 na 30 na himsemi pesa yenu mnatowa empowerment kama ya Leo mkimaliza kufanya fundraising kama no million moja Gawa watu pesa yenu waebde nayo,” he added.

Loosely translated as “These women go back home disappointed, and after three weeks, you come back and give them small cheques of Ksh30,000 or Ksh50,000. You also fail to disclose the total amount raised during the fundraiser. If, for example, today’s fundraising raises Ksh1 million, then distribute that entire amount to the people present so they can leave with it.”

Kalasinga’s current woes

Kalasinga, who is currently at odds with his party, Ford Kenya, held his own empowerment event attended by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, and Bumula MP Jack Wamboka.

He assured those present that all funds raised would be fully distributed to the women in attendance.

The remarks come amid his fallout with Ford Kenya, with Kalasinga expressing concern over the party’s support in 2027.

He has in the past urged his constituents to judge him based on his development record should the party deny him a ticket.
