A multi-agency security operation has led to the successful recovery of 15 goats stolen from the Takaiwa area in Pokot North Sub-County.

The operation, carried out on July 12, 2025, underscores the determination of security agencies to tackle the persistent problem of livestock theft in the region.

Livestock theft remains a major challenge in parts of northern Kenya, where communities heavily rely on pastoralism for their livelihoods. The prompt and coordinated response by security forces highlights the growing effectiveness of joint operations in addressing rural crime and maintaining order in vulnerable areas.

According to authorities, the operation began immediately after a livestock theft report was received. Security teams quickly mobilised and launched a strategic pursuit of the persons of interest. This swift action prevented the stolen animals from being moved further or sold off, a common scenario in similar incidents. The team’s preparedness and timely intervention played a critical role in tracking the suspects before they could evade capture.

Faced with mounting pressure from the pursuing officers, the thieves abandoned the stolen goats at Kaakali Village in the Kalemngorok area. This development reflects the effectiveness of the multi-agency response, forcing the culprits to prioritise their escape over retaining the livestock. While the animals were recovered, the persons of interest managed to flee, highlighting the ongoing challenge of apprehending individuals involved in cattle rustling and theft.

Plans to return to owners

The recovered goats were safely escorted to the General Service Unit (GSU) camp in Nakwamoru, where they await collection by their rightful owner. This step marks a partial resolution to the incident, bringing relief to the affected family and the local community.

Meanwhile, investigations are underway to identify and arrest the persons of interest. Authorities have assured residents that efforts to pursue justice will continue, with security teams working to dismantle criminal networks involved in livestock theft.

The National Police Service has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with communities and other government agencies to combat banditry, cattle rustling, and related crimes. Such partnerships remain crucial in fostering long-term security and stability in Turkana and other affected regions.
