Mumias East constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has taken a swipe at National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, accusing him of engaging in partisan politics despite holding a constitutional office meant to remain neutral.

In a statement laced with sarcasm and humour issued via his official Instagram account on the night of Saturday, July 5, 2025, Salasya questioned the Speaker’s involvement in the current political affairs, particularly those aligned with the Kenya Kwanza government.

According to Salasya, a speaker of the National Assembly should not be allowed to engage in politics, but Wetang’ula has been moving around the country to join Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s economic empowerment programs.

The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) first-term MP took issue with Wetang’ula putting on a crown with political slogans aimed at supporting President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027.

“I used to think a speaker of a national assembly was never to be allowed in politics of the day until I saw Papa wa Roma in Kirauni. 😄 🤣 😂 😆 😄 The KK government is the most confused gvt,” Salasya stated.

Wetang’ula’s political engagements

Wetang’ula has been publicly making political statements, some of which are direct attacks at the opposition.

He has since hit back at Rigathi Gachagua and his entourage of opposition politicians following their tour of the larger western region on Friday, July 4, 2025.

Speaking during an empowerment forum in Jomvu, Mombasa County, on Saturday, July 5, 2025, Wetang’ula specifically dismissed Gachagua’s assertions that the former DP has been at the forefront of advancing the interests of the Luhya nation.

“We have leaders who were in power yesterday and have now forgotten what they used to say. Last year, we were in Bungoma, and our brother of shares (Gachagua). I was telling Ruto what he had given us as a region and asked him to add us some more. But he (Gachagua) adamantly interjected, stating that we had no shares in the government and what we had was enough.

“Yesterday I saw him there, and he seemed to have forgotten what he used to say. stating that he is the one who has been advocating for development for the people of the region to get additional resources. He is the one who claimed he had placed snares at the state house to catch Raila, but it so happened they trapped himself,” he said.

The speaker urged the people to stand behind the incumbent president and support him for a second term to finish his tenure.
