Homa Bay Township Member of Parliament (MP) Opondo Kaluma has bragged that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) parties will bag all the by-elections in the country.

In a statement on Saturday, July 5, 2025, Kaluma, who is a staunch proponent of the broad-based government, indicated that the two parties wield immense influence and that they will secure the presidency in 2027 as well.

“All upcoming by-elections will be won by UDA and ODM. The useless opposition can delay the swearing-in for as long as they want, but they won’t escape their fate! ODM-UDA – 50 bila brake,” Kaluma stated.

Pending by-elections

Several constituencies remain unrepresented in the current parliament following years of delayed reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Among the constituencies that lack representation is Banisa Constituency, whose MP, Kullow Hassan, died after getting knocked down by a hit-and-run by a motorcycle in South B in 2023, just shortly after being elected.

In Magarini Constituency, the Supreme Court nullified the elections of Harrison Kombe in 2024, after it was established that the results had been tampered with, setting the stage for a by-election in the area.

Equally, a by-election is pending in Ugunja Constituency after President William Ruto appointed area MP Opiyo Wandayi to his cabinet.

Wandayi became one of the ODM officials to be poached by Ruto and co-opted into the government in the capacity of the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum.

In the Malava Constituency, another by-election is pending following the death of the area Member of Parliament, Malulu Injendi, after a short illness.

Drumming up support

UDA officials and President William Ruto’s Personal Assistant Farouk Kibet have toured the constituency several times to drum up support for a potential UDA candidate to fill the position.

Mbeere North is equally vacant after Ruto appointed the area MP, Geoffrey Ruku, as the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service following his fallout with the former holder of the office, Justin Muturi, who has since decamped and joined the United Opposition.

Kasipul Constituency is also vacant after the area MP Ong’ondo Were was shot dead by unknown assailants while heading home from Parliament on April 30, 2025, along Ngong Road.

Several people have expressed an interest in the seat, including the late MP’s son Boyd Were, who seems to have gotten a tacit endorsement by ODM leaders during his father’s funeral in May 2025.
