Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has sensationally stated that the Mawego Police Station set itself on fire.

Speaking during the send-off of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang at his Kakoth village in Kabondo-Kasipul on Friday, July 4, 2025, Owino said that the police station burnt itself to the ground, just as police had initially said that Ojwang’ had hit his head on the cell wall to death.

“To those who said that Ojwang’ had hit his head against the police cell wall to death, this police station has also set itself on fire,” Owino said.

Leaders demand justice

Ojwang’ was buried in a high-profile funeral that saw various local leaders attend his interment service, with most of them demanding justice for the family.

The father of one was the only child in his family and had left distraught parents, a young wife and a boy behind after he was killed at the hands of police officers.

Tension gripped his Kakoth village on Thursday, July 3, 2025, when his body arrived in the area and was received by a mammoth crowd of youth, who took over the programme.

The youth dismounted the casket from the hearse and carried the body atop their shoulders in a procession towards the Mawego Police Station, where Ojwang’ was first booked after being arrested by DCI officers on June 7, 2025.

Station torched

The crowd began pelting the police station with stones before the officers fled the scene, salvaging a few records that they could before the crowd set the entire place on fire.

Helpless police officers stationed at the facility watched from a distance as their duty station was reduced to ashes, while the crowd marched with the casket to Ojwang’s home.

DCI officers are said to have found Ojwang’ having lunch during his infamous arrest, and drove with him for over 350 kilometres to Nairobi, where he was booked at the Central Police Station.

The following day, he was reported dead after his distraught father had travelled overnight to secure his release, only to be confronted by the sad news that his son was no more.

The death sparked major protests in the country, leading to the arrest of several police officers and the stepping aside of the Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, who was the complainant in the case leading to Ojwang’s arrest.
