Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Party leader Rigathi Gachagua’s convoy was on Friday, July 4, 2025, stoned in Kimilili, in Bungoma County.

The former deputy president was in the area to drum up support for the United Opposition’s leaders in the run-up to the general election in two years.

Gachagua shared photos of part of the entourage that was damaged by unknown people, who were seen in the Chwele area with batons, stones and other crude weapons.

No place for violence

In a statement, Gachagua indicated that violence has no place in the country, and that leaders who resort to brutality undermine the very foundations of good governance and true democracy.

“The people of Kimilili Constituency in Bungoma County have spoken loudly and clearly: violence and extrajudicial killings have no place in our society. Governments that thrive on violence are short-lived and lack legitimacy,” Gachagua stated.

“Leaders who resort to brutality and suppression undermine the very foundations of good governance and true democracy.”

Progressive society

“We must call out such actions wherever they occur and stand firm against them. Peace, justice, and respect for human rights are the pillars of a progressive society,” he added.

Speaking on Friday, June 4, 2025, during a public rally in Busia as part of the final day of the People’s Loyal Opposition Coalition’s Western tour, Gachagua told the crowd that the Luhya community had been “mistreated and dumped repeatedly” by Raila for decades.

He scorned Raila’s history of post-election handshake politics, saying that each time he joins the government, Western Kenya voters are left behind in opposition with no tangible benefits.

Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), said the same fate had befallen the Mt Kenya region under President William Ruto’s leadership.

“We from Mt Kenya have also been misused,” he said. “Ruto promised us development but delivered betrayal.”

This comes just a day after Gachagua said that he had managed to ring-fence the Mount Kenya region from the forays of President William Ruto, and that he had the keys.

“I was the deputy of Ruto, do you know him more than I do? Will you give us your leaders so that we can agree on how to take over the leadership of this country? In Mountain Kenya, I locked out Ruto, and the key is with me, I walk with it everywhere I go,” Gachagua said.
