On July 3, 2024, just after the tragic Gen Z protests in Kenya, she marked Leon’s 18th birthday with a moving message, expressing her fears as a mother raising a young Black boy in today’s world.

“I am extremely emotional today. Happy 18th, my big baby. With everything happening around us, mothers losing their innocent sons to police brutality and other injustices black boys face in today’s society, I want to hold you a little closer today, with so much gratitude to God for getting you to this big age. We did it, my boy. Happy Birthday, my heart,” she expressed.

Campus love

The mother of two has always been open about her journey into motherhood, especially with Leon, who was born from a campus relationship when she was still a student in Kampala, Uganda.

In previous interviews, the award-winning actress reflected on her strict upbringing and how it shaped her early experiences with relationships.

“My mum is very strict, so we did not mingle with boys as such. I went to an all-girls boarding school,” she recalled.

Adding;

“I never understood anything about contraceptives. You learn about that in class, but you don’t think you need them. I went for a morning-after pill after three weeks.”

Kate further opened up about the moment she had to break the news of her pregnancy to her mother.

“Before the day she came back, I wrote her a very long letter and then disappeared to my friend’s place for a week,” she said.

Her mother, however, did not take the situation lightly.

“My mum made sure I knew exactly what being a mum is. I stayed home for two years. I was the house help, mum, doing everything,” Kate revealed.

Kate also has a daughter, Njeri, whom she had with her ex-husband Philip Karaja alias Phil Director.
