Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has predicted a landslide win for President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Speaking on the night of Wednesday, July 2, 2025, during an interview with one of the local TV stations, Cherargei listed some of the candidates he believes will be Ruto’s worth competitors in the presidential contest.

According to the lawmaker, Wiper Democratic Movement’s Kalonzo Musyoka will be a candidate, as well as former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

However, he argues that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will not be on the presidential ballot because he was removed from office by way of impeachment.

Cherargei on Matiang’i

He argues that Matiang’i will only garner about one million votes, mostly from the Kisii region, with Kalonzo also garnering around the same number of votes from his Ukambani backyard.

“Kalonzo will run; Rigathi Gachagua will not run because he was impeached; Dr Fred Matiang’i will run and will get some one million votes from Kisii. Kalonzo will earn some one or two million votes from Ukambani, and then there will be no votes,” Cherargei stated.

Cherargei went ahead to argue that Gachagua’s claims that he would mobilise eight million votes from Mt Kenya to ensure Ruto is a one-term president are baseless.

According to Cherargei, removing eight million votes from Kenya’s total registered voters will leave Ruto with 12 million votes, making him win a second term with ease.

“You know, by the time he was talking yesterday, he was talking about eight million, including the minority opposition. So we will take 12 million votes early in the morning,” he said.

Gachagua-Ruto spat

Gachagua, who fell out with Ruto following his impeachment, has since teamed up with the opposition in an effort to oust Ruto.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) party leader has been hitting out at the president, accusing him of deceiving the whole Mt Kenya region.

He has since vowed to do everything possible to ensure that Ruto does not get votes from Mt Kenya during the 2027 elections.
