The family of the late blogger Albert Ojwang has denied claims that they received Ksh10 million from comedian Eric Omondi’s fundraising efforts, clarifying that the total support received was slightly over Ksh5 million.

Speaking during Ojwang’s requiem mass at Ridgeways Baptist Church on Thursday, July 2, 2025, the family’s lawyer, Julius Juma, addressed the ongoing speculation, stating that the public had been misinformed.

“It has been said or shared on various media channels that Mzee received Ksh10 million. I have been asked to set the record straight, and I am doing so on the pulpit,” Juma stated.

According to Juma, the actual amount received was Ksh5,060,000.

“The family wishes to confirm that they received Ksh2 million from the Head of State, Ksh1 million from Honourable Raila Odinga and Ksh2 million from Kenyans who gave in the form of Ksh1, Ksh10, and Ksh100 shillings,” he added.

Juma emphasised that while the family is grateful for all the support, they found it necessary to clarify the exact figures in light of growing misinformation online.

Omondi’s claims

The clarification came shortly after a video of comedian Eric Omondi circulated online in which he stated that his efforts had raised nearly Ksh10 million for the family of the late blogger.

“I have not included whatever is currently in the bank. We had reached Ksh2.6 million by last week. One thing is that people are still sending money. That Ksh2.6 million was raised on the day I posted about Albert’s father, so it means the amount accumulated within the following 24 hours. We are roughly at around Ksh10 million,” he claimed.

Omondi, who has taken an active role in advocating against police brutality, also shared his frustrations, saying he felt let down by Albert’s father after the family received funds from President William Ruto.

“I was betrayed. I was disappointed. I was angered because we lost a brother, and he lost a son in the hands of a government agency. I just felt betrayed. We are fighting a cause. Just a week later, someone else had been shot,” Omondi added.

Ojwang will be laid to rest on July 4 at his father’s home in Kakwonyo Village, Homa Bay County.
