Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has held a breakfast meeting with Kisii region leaders.
Some of the leaders present include Senator Nyamira Omukongo Omogeni, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Nyaribari Masaba Member of Parliament (MP) Daniel Manduku, Kitutu Masaba MP Gesairo Clive, Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, and Kitutu Chache MP Japheth Nyakundi.
In a statement on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka stated that the former CS is committed to progressive leadership of the country.
“Was privileged to attend a breakfast meeting of a section of Gusii leaders hosted by Fred Matiang’i. Matiang’i is committed to participating in progressive & transformative leadership of our country!” he stated.
This comes a day after Matiang’i dismissed claims that his reported presidential ambitions are being bankrolled by powerful individuals behind the scenes.
Speaking during an interview at a local TV station on July 1, 2025, Matiang’i said discussions around who is funding his political future were unnecessary and speculative.
“I don’t think that is for public discussion. The truth of the matter is that when you go into a campaign, you seek donors and people to support you for your campaign,” he said.
Matiang’i added that he would welcome support from well-wishers who believe in his leadership, insisting he had no intention of using money to buy votes or bribe the electorate.

Matiang’i’s bid
He declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027 during a homecoming event at Gusii Stadium on May 2, 2025.
Speaking during the event, Matiang’i said he is ready to work with like-minded leaders to confront the challenges facing the country.

He emphasised his readiness to serve, citing his decade-long record under former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
“For ten years, I worked tirelessly for this country. I am known to be a good worker, and if given the chance, I am ready to work for Kenyans,” Matiang’i said.
He noted that Kenya is grappling with serious challenges and cautioned against political division and complacency.
