KRA Applauds Kenyans for Tax Filing Dedication, Offers Grace Period After June 30 Portal Crash

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has added extra days to allow Kenyans to file their income tax returns and has dropped penalties and extra fees for late submissions. This decision comes after a big system failure happened on June 30, 2025.

In a notice shared on July 1, KRA said its online system broke down because too many users tried filing their tax returns on the very last day. The heavy traffic on the platform disrupted services for filing and payments stopping many taxpayers from submitting before the deadline.

KRA acknowdledged the inconvenience and pushed the deadline to July 5, 2025. It assured taxpayers that no penalties or interest would be charged if they submitted their returns for the income year ending December 31, 2024, by the extended date.

“Due to the high volume of taxpayers attempting to file their returns on 30th June, 2025, the system experienced technical difficulties which disrupted the normal functioning of the return filing and payment services, preventing a number of taxpayers from submitting their returns on time,” the notice stated.

Referring to Section 89(5a)(b) of the Tax Procedures Act, the authority promised to waive all charges connected to the delay for those impacted.

KRA Applauds Public Dedication

This extension comes after a one-day grace period given on Monday, which was supposed to end by midnight on Tuesday. KRA praised the large number of people responding calling it a display of both patriotism and confidence in Kenya’s tax system.

The tax authority emphasized that the increase in participation shows how dedicated Kenyans are to meeting their tax duties even when facing tough circumstances. KRA encouraged people affected to take advantage of the extra time to file their returns and clear any outstanding taxes before the new deadline arrives.

The extension and waiver are limited to those affected by the disruption on June 30. KRA reminded taxpayers to use the official online portal and assured them of necessary support to make the filing process easier in the coming days.
