The United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) on Monday, June 30, 2025, witnessed the ceremonial hoisting of the Kenyan flag at its headquarters, marking the official deployment of the first Kenyan United Nations Military Observer (UNMO) to the mission.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in a statement shared on their official website on the night of Monday, June 30, stated that the ceremony marked a historic milestone as Lt Col David Ogoti became the first Kenyan officer to join UNMOGIP.

Ogoti officially made Kenya a Troop Contributing Country (TCC) to one of the United Nations’ oldest peacekeeping operations.

Second African nation to join UNMOGIP

Kenya has now become the second African nation, after Nigeria, to support the mission, which monitors the ceasefire line in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir.

“In a landmark moment for Kenya’s contribution to global peacekeeping, the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) today witnessed the ceremonial hoisting of the Kenyan flag at its headquarters, marking the official deployment of a Kenyan officer as the first United Nations Military Observer (UNMO) from Kenya to serve in the mission,” KDF stated.

“This historic occasion signifies Kenya’s formal entry into UNMOGIP as a Troop Contributing Country (TCC), becoming the second African nation, after Nigeria, to support the mission. The inclusion of Lt Col David Ogoti represents not only Kenya’s growing commitment to international peace and security but also the deepening of Africa’s presence within one of the United Nations’ oldest peacekeeping missions.”

Presiding over the occasion was Chief Military Observer Navy Captain Luciano Dias Dutra, with the chief guest being Kenya’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Njiru. He was accompanied by Kenya’s Defence Advisor to Pakistan, Colonel Keter.

The Kenyan flag was hoisted alongside those of other contributing nations, symbolising Kenya’s deepening role in international peace and security.

It now stands as a powerful emblem of the country’s long-standing commitment to multilateral peacekeeping and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
