Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and 2027 presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i on Sunday, June 29, joined PCEA believers for a church service in Thika.

He was accompanied by Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, embattled nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, Gatong’ora Ward MCA Dan Gitau, and other leaders during the Sunday service at PCEA Thika Town Church in Kiambu County.

This comes at a time when Matiang’i is actively traversing the country, rallying support as he eyes the presidency in the 2027 general election. He has aligned himself with like-minded individuals in the opposition, with notable figures already backing his bid.

Matiang’i has emerged as a leading contender in the 2027 presidential race. He officially declared his candidacy on May 2, 2025, at Gusii Stadium in Kisii, citing public demand and his track record under former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.

Matiang’i highlighted his extensive experience in governance, having spearheaded major reforms such as Huduma Namba, NHIF changes, and overhauls in the education sector—positioning himself as a hands-on leader capable of tackling Kenya’s key challenges.

Campaign

His campaign has gained strong momentum, particularly in the Gusii region (Kisii and Nyamira counties), which commands nearly one million registered voters. Regional leaders, including Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni, have endorsed his presidential bid, presenting him as a unifying figure for the region and a credible challenger to the current government led by President William Ruto and Raila Odinga’s ODM.

The Jubilee Party, under the patronage of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has also thrown its weight behind Matiang’i, endorsing him as its flagbearer and signalling significant establishment support.

Kioni’s support

Of the recent past, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has come out to really support him, saying that his party’s stand is to make sure that Matiangi wins the 2027 presidential elections. He has also gone ahead to state that Gachagua should step down and support Matiangi’s presidential quest.

In the opposition, they have agreed that when the right time comes, they will shelve individual interests and support one candidate as the flag bearer of the coalition that they would have formed at that time so as to guarantee them a quick win.
