Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday, June 29, 2025, joined the congregants of the Anglican Church of Kenya Diocese of Nyahururu, in Laikipia County, for service at the church.

According to a statement from the former DP, a Thanksgiving ceremony for the diocese is also scheduled to take place in the church after the normal church service.

The ceremony marks the second DP’s public presence since his tell-all interview with a local TV station on Friday, June 27, 2025, where he made public his views on the violent scenes that left over 60 people dead and massive destruction of property in its wake during the Wednesday, June 25 protest across the country.

Gachagua’s take on demos

In the interview, Gachagua made an array of accusations against William Ruto’s regime, accusing it of implicitly targeting the properties of the Kikuyu communities.

Gachagua also questioned why the government did not take action if indeed it had intelligence that he was planning to sponsor goons during the protests.

“I don’t know how fragile this government is. If they had intelligence that goons were being paid by Rigathi Gachagua or anyone else, why did they not arrest these goons?” He posed.

He went ahead to refute any links with the goons who wreaked havoc during the protests, emphasizing that the state would have gone hard on them had they been his.

“If they were my goons today, they would have been shot dead or in custody. If they had intelligence that Gachagua or anyone else had paid goons to come and cause mayhem in Nairobi, why didn’t they act on that intelligence? How did they allow goons to go to a police station unarmed and take over our police stations?” Gachagua said.

He also made public why he did not join the Gen Z protests.

“I was in my house the whole day; I was watching on TV until they stopped that live stream. I did not want to join the protest because during the 2024 protest, Gen Z asked us, the leaders, to keep off the protest. That is how it should be because they do not want to be owned by anybody; they are not under the direction of anybody, and they are not financed by anybody,” Gachagua explained.
