The family of a 17-year-old boy who was killed in Rongai, Kajiado County, during the June 25, 2025, Gen Z memorial protests, has reached out to Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya for help.

Taking to his official Instagram account on the night of Saturday, June 28, 2025, Salasya stated that the family of Eyan Sabatia Opango, who is his constituent, had contacted him.

According to Salasya, the teenager comes from a humble family in Mung’ang’a, Buloma village, in Mumias East, and was among the Gen Zs who joined the June 25 demonstrations in Rongai.

“I have lost a young soul, only 17 years old. Eyan Sabatia Opango, from a humble family in MUNGA’NGA, Buloma village, Mumias East, was among the Gen Z who joined the June 25th demonstrations in Rongai,” Salasya stated.

He went ahead to note that the deceased, whose body lies at City Mortuary awaiting postmortem, was a hard-working welder and not a criminal.

Salasya promises support

The lawmaker has vowed to join the family on Sunday, June 29, 2025, to offer his support.

“He was a hard-working welder, not a criminal. He wasn’t out to cause chaos; he was simply a young Luhya boy dreaming of a better Kenya. As I speak, his body lies at City Mortuary, awaiting a postmortem on Monday. His humble family reached out to me, and tomorrow I will personally visit them to offer my support during this difficult time,” he stated.

Salasya’s call on leaders

The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) lawmaker, who has since declared his interest in the 2027 presidential bid, also urged leaders to start listening to the concerns being raised by the young people.

“Let me be clear: this is no longer about tribes or individuals like Gachagua. This is about the issues that our young people are raising: inequality, joblessness, corruption, and hopelessness. That’s what they want addressed. I now believe that many young Kenyans were killed. But killing is not a solution. The only solution is for leaders to stop ignoring these voices and start listening. These youth are the heartbeat of this country,” Salasya wrote on Instagram.
