Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has faulted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following the arrest of three persons in connection with the events of the June 25 protests.
Mwangi took to his X page to vouch for the innocence of the trio—John Mulingwa, Mark Amiani, and Francis Mutunge Mwangi, whom the DCI claims orchestrated the violence and destruction of property in Wednesday’s, June 25 demos.
He argued that the three are being framed by the agency for their role in grassroots mobilization, terming the charges preferred against them as trumped up.
Innocent
“Hey @DCI_Kenya we know the goons who wreaked havoc in the CBD were hired by politicians. The activists in custody are innocent of all those false charges. They are being framed for their grassroots organising work. Here are images of goons roaming the CBD freely. #FreeOurComrades,” he statement read.
Mwangi parted his statement with a call to action, urging the investigative agency to instead pursue the goons seen roaming the streets of Nairobi in recent demonstrations.
In a statement on Saturday, June 27, 2025. The DCI confirmed arresting the three persons in connection to the chaos after conducting an intelligence-led operation on Friday, June 27.
DCI makes three arrests.
The agency stated the persons were tracked down through a forensic investigation triggered by testimonies from affected citizens.
“In an intelligence-led operation conducted on Friday, June 27, DCI detectives intercepted and arrested three ill-reputed campaigners who, through coordinated channels and social media posts, incited goons to violence, massive theft and destruction of property, thus propagating a narrative that undermined national stability and the constitutionally protected right to peaceably assemble and picket. JOHN MULINGWA NZAU alias GARANG, MARK AMIANI alias GENERALI,and FRANCIS MUTUNGE MWANGI alias CHEBUKATI were flushed from a Mombasa-bound bus at the Konza City section, following an in-depth forensic investigation triggered by testimonies from concerned and affected citizens,” a statement from the DCI said.
The agency further said that the crackdown on more criminals linked to the Wednesday chaos was on course, with more arrests expected in the coming days.
“Among others who have already been identified and are being pursued, the suspects had planned to hole up at a coastal hideout to evade police dragnet, oblivious that justice would catch up with them sooner or later,” they stated.
The persons of interest will be arraigned in court on Monday, June 20, 2025, to face charges of malicious damage to property, arson, theft, and incitement to violence.
