President William Ruto has declared that those who attacked police officers during the June 25 protests will face consequences.
He made the remarks during a meeting with regional and county security officials, along with National Government Administration Officers, held at State House, Nairobi, on Saturday, June 28.
Ruto condemned the violent incidents where police officers were assaulted and public property destroyed, terming the acts as criminal and unacceptable. He stated that no country can be secure if criminals are allowed to threaten law enforcement officers, adding that protecting the lives of police officers is essential for the safety of all citizens.
“We cannot have a country where criminals run after our policemen. If a policeman’s life is in danger, then how can our families be safe? This trend must change. The criminals that attacked our officers and destroyed property in the Wednesday mayhem will be held to account,” President Ruto said.
He emphasised that those responsible for attacking officers and causing destruction would be pursued and held accountable. Ruto assured security agencies of his government’s full support and promised to stand by every officer as they carry out their duties.
“We will stand by every man and woman in uniform and protect them as they discharge their duties. That is how we will have a more secure and stable Kenya where meaningful development occurs. Hosted our regional and county security and National Government Administration officers at State House, Nairobi,” he added.
The president said that ensuring the safety of law enforcement is critical to maintaining peace, stability, and development in the country. His remarks come amid rising tensions following a wave of anti-government protests that have led to clashes between demonstrators and the police in several parts of the country.
Action by DCI
This pledge from the president comes moments after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers have arrested three individuals said to have been involved in the attack on people and property during demonstrations honouring victims of the June 25, 2024, protests.
In a statement on Saturday, June 28, 2025, DCI revealed that three – John Mulingwa Nzau, alias Garang; Mark Amiani, alias Generali; and Francis Mutunge Mwangi, alias Chebukati – were arrested following an intelligence-led operation conducted on Friday, June 27, 2025.
“DCI detectives intercepted and arrested three ill-reputed campaigners who, through coordinated channels and social media posts, incited goons to violence, massive theft, and destruction of property, thus propagating a narrative that undermined national stability and the constitutionally protected right to peaceably assemble and picket,” read the statement in part.
“John Mulingwa Nzau, alias Garang, and Mark Amiani, alias Generali, as well as Francis Mutunge Mwangi, alias Chebukati, were flushed from a Mombasa-bound bus at the Konza City section, following an in-depth forensic investigation triggered by testimonies from concerned and affected citizens.”
Furthermore, the agency disclosed that the three had a plan to hide in the coastal region to evade arrest.
“Among others who have already been identified and are being pursued, the three had planned to hole up at a coastal hideout to evade the police dragnet, oblivious that justice would catch up with them sooner or later,” read the statement.
They are set to be arraigned in court on Monday, June 28, 2025.
