Joseph Karanja: Bodaboda who rescued victims of protests was kidnapped

Reports indicate that at least 11 people lost their lives while several others suffered serious injuries, many allegedly caused by police brutality.

In addition to deaths and injuries, some Kenyans have also reportedly disappeared following the violent protest.

Among those reportedly disappearing are Joseph Karanja, a bodaboda operator who has been helping the injured protesters in the city center of Nairobi.

Karanja is said to have an important role in chasing victims of security during the protest.

In one sad story, Karanja narrated to help a woman who was struck in the face with a tear gas in the GPO area.

The effect left her with a socket on her cheek and brushed several of her teeth. Karanja moved quickly to get her medical assistance and was able to hand her over to an ambulance heading to the hospital.

However, a few hours later, at 1.30 am, Karanja was reportedly taken by unknown people who were driving a Subaru with no registration number.

In a sad message sent to a friend, he wrote:

“The thing my friend is not safe I was taken by these people I don’t know I think they have been following me.

In another WhatsApp message, Karanja revealed that he was arrested at the gate of his house as soon as he got down from his motorcycle.

“The car has no registration number, and they threaten to pick up our phones. We are about five,” he said.

His disappearance has sparked public complaints, with Kenyans coming out on social networks to seek answers and demanding his release immediately.
