The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has confirmed that at least eight people have died and hundreds injured during the first anniversary of the June 25 protests witnessed in the country on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

In a joint statement shared via its X page on Wednesday evening, June 25, 2025, Faith Odhiambo revealed that eight protesters were killed in the demonstrations that spanned across 23 counties.

She also noted that at least 400 protesters were treated, with eight of them receiving treatments for gunshot wounds, while 83 people were given specialised treatments for serious injuries.

“The Law Society of Kenya, Police Reforms Working Group and the Kenya Medical Association express condolences to the families of the eight protesters who were killed today. At least 400 others were treated, with 83 of them referred to specialised treatment for serious injuries. At least 8 protesters have been treated for gunshot wounds. Three of the injured include police officers.

The body has, however, noted that though the statistics have been confirmed by medics, they are subject to change. As more information comes from the protests.

“While these figures are confirmed by medics and human rights defenders, sadly, the exact figures may only be known in the course of time,” part of the LSK’s statement read.

In a passionate appeal, Odhiambo additionally urged the demonstrators to remain peaceful and on the lookout for their safety.

Call to keep safe

“Today’s protests saw significant numbers of protesters publicly demonstrate across 23 counties. We urge those still on the streets to exercise care to avoid further loss of life and injury,” the statement continued.

She also continued the plea for police officers to exercise restraint while undertaking their responsibility of maintaining law and order.

“We remind all law enforcement agencies currently deployed and under the control and command of the National Police Service to exercise restraint. Every Kenyan life is precious. We pray for our nation, dialogue, and a way forward from the political impasse facing Kenya,” the statement concluded.

On the same breath, Odhiambo, while condoling with the families of those killed during Wednesday’s June 25, 2025, protests, urged Kenyans to assume full responsibility of their safety.

“We face an unfortunate paradox as a country where more lives are being lost as the people seek justice for the lives already lost. Our hearts break for all the victims of the continued trend of police brutality and excesses. We urge all Kenyans to take responsibility for their safety and that of fellow citizens in these trying moments for our country. Let us keep each other safe,” Odhiambo plea on her X page read.
