The family of blogger and killed teacher, Albert Ojwang, has officially announced his funeral date, with a call for justice over his death.

Ojwang, 31, was killed in a police custody at Nairobi police station, just hours after being arrested at his home in Kikwanyo, Homa Bay County.

Previously, his family had said it would not bury him until justice was achieved.

Where will Ojwang be buried?

However, in a recent interview on the Obinna TV show on Monday, June 23, the family confirmed that Albert Ojwang would be buried on Friday, July 4, 2025.

Funeral Service (Requiem Mass) is scheduled for Wednesday, July 2, and the area will be confirmed, though it will take place in Nairobi.

John Okwanyo, the nephew of the deceased, called on Kenyans to record the dates, stating that the funeral would take place in Kakoth Village, Kikwanyo, Sub -County in Rachuonyo East, Homa Bay County, near Nyawango Primary School.

“He will be buried on July 4, 2025 – a very important date for the family. We urge Kenyans to keep it in mind so that all those who want to attend can prepare in advance,” He explained.

The family has welcomed all Kenyans, especially the generation of Gen Z, to engage with them in giving final honors.

So far, the family has received a total of KSh 5.6 million from various donors, including President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

They have emphasized that Ojwang’s father, Meshack Opiyo, has not had the opportunity to spend the money, and that every contribution is safe.

Activist Hanifa Adan described some of the major funeral costs, including:

Meanwhile, Ojwang’s uncle, Polycarp Odhiambo, exposed a more traumatic event that has exacerbated family sadness.

He said that Ojwang’s father tried to donate funeral money but was challenged due to lack of identity.

When they sought help from Safaricomthey found that someone had invaded the account and provided more than KSh 500,000, as well as KSh 17,000 of the father’s savings.
