The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a detailed 7-day weather forecast, valid from June 23, 2025, to June 30, 2025, warning of significant rainfall, sharp temperature shifts, and strong winds across the country.

The alert, released on Monday, June 23, 2025, on their official X account, signals a week of weather extremes that could disrupt livelihoods and travel plans.

According to KMD, heavy rainfall is expected in several regions, including the Central Highlands (Nairobi included), Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Coast, and parts of Western Kenya. Some areas could receive up to 120 mm of rain within the week.

“Rainfall is likely over Central Highlands, including Nairobi, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Coast, (and) Western Kenya,” the department posted on X.

While the rainfall is a blessing for agriculture, it also raises the risk of flooding—particularly in low-lying zones near Lake Victoria, which are historically prone to weather-related disruptions.

Temperatures

Temperature patterns will be just as dramatic. Northeastern and northwestern counties are set to experience scorching daytime highs above 30°C, while nighttime temperatures in the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and the Mt. Kilimanjaro region could drop below 10°C. “Daytime: >30°C in NE & NW Kenya; Nighttime: <10°C in Central Highlands, Central Rift & around Mt. Kilimanjaro,” KMD noted. These extreme swings pose health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

Coastal areas, along with southeastern, northeastern, and northwestern regions, should also brace for strong winds exceeding 25 knots (about 12.86 meters per second). These winds may aggravate existing hazards, particularly for fishermen on Lake Victoria.

“Cold and cloudy in parts of the Highlands (E & W), SE Lowlands & Rift Valley,” KMD added, urging Kenyans to remain vigilant and plan ahead. The department also provided channels for real-time updates, including a 5-day forecast, WhatsApp updates, and the FASTA-Ken system.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert as the country navigates this volatile weather pattern.
