Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has vowed to take on Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Party leader Rigathi Gachagua, amid an escalating battle for the control of the vote-rich bastion of the Mount Kenya region.

In a fiery statement on Sunday, June 22, 2025, Kindiki lashed out at Gachagua, noting that he would obliterate the former Deputy President’s theatrics spectacularly and decisively.

“Mr Trap man, your brief and scandalous political life has been sustained through shallow threats, hubris, pride and incompetence,” Kindiki observed.

Intention to distract development

“Since your intention is to distract us, we will continue to focus on the important duty of building Kenya as is required of us by the responsibilities of office.”

“However, we will still find the time to take you head-on and obliterate your petty and juvenile theatrics in the most spectacular and decisive manner. You are naively mistaken,” Kindiki stated.

The remark comes just a day after Kindiki issued another statement in which he castigated Gachagua for coining slogans aimed at ramping up his political relevance in the country.

“Those whose only message is the chants about who will be in office for how long or who speaks with what kind of voice will be swept away by the torrential downpour of an increasingly smarter, enlightened and no-nonsense public who can no longer buy delusion from political dimwits, fakes, cons and counterfeits,” read the statement.

Haya madharau na kiburi yataisha (These disrespect and pride will end); it is only a matter of time,” he stated.

Battle for Mt Kenya

In the battle for the control of the Mt Kenya region, the two leaders have gone all out to fight for the control of the heart and soul of the people, with each side promising a better future.

While Kindiki remains the region’s top-most politician given his position in the Kenya Kwanza government, Gachagua’s onslaught in the area has wooed several senior politicians to his side, threatening Kindiki’s relevance with barely two years to the general elections.

Kindiki now runs his empowerment tours in the region with elected legislators whom Gachagua has labelled traitors of the Mount Kenya region, earmarked for ouster from office in the 2027 polls.

Gachagua’s intention to ring-fence Mount Kenya poses a major political hurdle for Kindiki, who will face an uphill task of delivering meaningful votes for Ruto should they vie for the presidency on a joint ticket.
