Former Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza has called for political tolerance ahead of President William Ruto’s planned visit to the county.
The head of state will be in Meru on Saturday, June 21, 2025, for the 10th Annual Dairy Farmers Field Day, which Mwangaza says she will attend.
In a press statement issued on the night of Thursday, June 19, 2025, through her official Facebook account, Mwangaza urged those seeking to politicize the event to refrain.
She also urged the locals to engage the president without interference from intruders and self-seekers, whom she says do not have the farmers’ interests at heart.
“My call for political tolerance is made mindful that this weekend, Meru county hosts two critical events: The 10th Annual Dairy Farmers Field Day, where H.E. the President will engage farmers on improving milk production. As a large-scale dairy farmer and union member, I will attend. I urge those seeking to politicize this event to refrain. Farmers have a clear agenda for the President—let us engage him without interference from intruders and self-seekers who do not have the farmers’ interests at heart,” she stated.
She also noted that opposition leaders will have an event in the county, and will be hosted by a faction of Meru elites.
She urged Meru residents to embrace calm, tolerance, and maturity during the two events.
Mwangaza on divisive politics
Mwangaza went ahead to call on the locals to reject divisive politics and allow every leader to present their vision without disruption.
“There is also the visit by opposition leaders from across the country, hosted by a faction of Meru elites,” she stated.
“I urge all Meru residents to embrace calm, tolerance, and maturity during these visits. Let us reject divisive politics and allow every leader to present their vision without disruption. Meru’s strength lies in unity, not sub-ethnic rivalry or political vendettas,” she added.
Political alliances
In the same press statement, Mwangaza claimed that a section of political leaders who plotted her ouster are now seeking to enter into an alliance with her.
She noted that the leaders whom she says have declared themselves as Meru representatives are the same people who planned, schemed, financed, and sponsored her removal from office.
