The protests, titled ‘Gen Z Memorial March, are expected to celebrate one year since the rough protests of June 25, 2024, to protest the Financial Bill that turned out to be tragic after the brutal police repression.

Several Kenyan youths lost their lives that day as they marched to protest the government’s tax punishing measures, thus sparking national anger and internationally condemned.

Will the Nairobi police allow the June 25 protest?

During Wednesday, June 18, an evening meeting with the media, Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda announced that security preparations were going well.

The Nairobi police chief assured those involved in the general public security during the protest.

“For June 25, we have found what we call an enhanced plan for it; a letter that was presented to the center, we have that copy of their intentions,” Seda said.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining peaceful behavior, noting that although the right to march is protected, the breach of public stability or acts of abuse will not be tolerated.

“What I would like to urge the people to refrain from holding a peaceful protest, not having a protest that will interfere with other people who may not be part of the protesters,” He prayed.

The June 25 protests will take place on weekdays, and Seda reminded the protesters to remember others who are doing their daily activities.

Shops, bus stations, and hotels will be left open, and police want to prevent any interruption of economic activity or movement of non -participating citizens.

“The plans we planned to make sure everyone else who will participate and even those who will not participate, will be safe,” Seda confirmed.

Why did the previous protests in Nairobi turn into violence?

Seda made it clear about the challenges that have destroyed the old protests, especially when peace rallies have taken a stream of violence.

He warned against incitement and confrontation with lawmakers, citing a recent incident in which protesters allegedly confronted armed officials.

“We seem to have no civilization when we start to get together, and then we move on, it turns out violence. It now wins the logic of running it. And this is what makes the situation now worse,” He said.

He reiterated that the role of the police was not to offend the public but to ensure that the law and stability were followed.

“We are not there for a war with you public; we are just for providing security. We will provide adequate protection and good security,” he added.
