The family of the late teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang’ has thanked President William Ruto for personally reaching out to comfort them following Albert’s death while in police custody.
Family spokesperson Harman Opiyo commended the President for calling Albert’s father, Meshack Ojwang’, to express his condolences. He described the gesture as one that reflects empathy and leadership.
“President Ruto saw it necessary to comfort us, and as a family, we appreciate this gesture. It is his responsibility as a national leader to show concern,” said Opiyo.
Alongside the condolence message, President Ruto also extended a donation of Ksh2 million to support the grieving family during this difficult time.
“I want to thank the President for taking my son Albert as his son and feeling the pain. There are so many people who have died, and he has decided to take the loss as his own and called me to send his condolences,” Ojwang’ said.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also called the family to express his sympathy and solidarity over Albert’s untimely death.
Speaking in Nyawango, Homa Bay, Opiyo revealed that the family is still struggling with immense grief but remains focused on seeking justice for their loved one.
“We are heartbroken. Our wish is for justice to be served. We have given the government space to conduct investigations and we urge them to fast-track the process so we can know the truth behind Albert’s death,” he said.
On the matter of burial, the family has yet to set a date. Opiyo explained that they are waiting for the official investigation to conclude before making funeral arrangements.
“We are waiting for the investigations to be completed before we can proceed with burial arrangements,” he added.
After receiving support from President Ruto, the family faced criticism from some Kenyans who accused them of accepting help from those they believe may be linked to the injustice. Critics have gone as far as accusing Albert’s father of siding with the oppressors.
Still, the family insists their focus is on uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.
