Former Chief Justice David Maraga has promised to get a team of professionals to help him run the country if elected as president in 2027.

Speaking on the night of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, during an interview with one of the local TV stations, Maraga said that he will have every government department led by a professional.

Once the professionals have been put in their right places, Maraga says he will allow them to work by providing the necessary leadership.

However, he notes that the professionals will be given the confidence they require to work, but will be called to account.

“I am a lawyer, and we have very many other professionals. This country requires many people. What I can place before Kenyans is that I am going to get a team of professionals in various areas. I will not purport to know what is done in the medical field; I will leave that to experts. I will do the necessary, get the right people in the right place, and once they are there, allow them to work. Give them the confidence they require to work, but call them to account. I believe that is what is required, and if Kenyans trust me, that is what I will do exactly,” Maraga said.

He went ahead to accuse the current President William Ruto-led administration of interfering with government institutions, especially the recruitment process.

He assured that if elected, he would only provide the leadership required to enable the business community, professionals, and dons in public universities to do their work as required of them.

Youth support

Moreover, Maraga promised to support the youth, noting that the country must get to a point where young people can be taken into leadership so that when the leaders get weak, the youth take over and run the country.

He also argued that 80% of the Kenyan population is under 40 years old.

Maraga’s presidential bid

His remarks come hours after he officially declared his bid for the 2027 presidential race.

Speaking on the night of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, during an interview with one of the local TV stations, Maraga said that he had made up his mind to run for the hotly contested presidency.

According to Maraga, the decision to run for the presidency came after discussions with friends and others, with him claiming that he made up his mind after serious reflection.

Maraga further says that the move came as a result of the events that have been happening in the country, including the way the young people have been handled during protests.

“This has come as a result of what has happened in the country. You are a parent, and many others are also parents; to see the young people being handled the way they have been handled is something that is extremely worrying. After discussions with friends and others, and after a serious reflection, I thought it was time that we think about the leadership of this country. We can’t let some people literally throw our country to the dogs. We need to think about that seriously, and it is as a result of that reflection that I have made up my mind that I will run in 2027 for the presidency of this country,” Maraga said.
