Steve Ndegwa, the middle-aged Kenyan man who is now the talk of TikTok thanks to his melodious renditions to his wife Naomi, has finally broken the silence on how his fame on the popular video-sharing app came to be.

Ndegwa, speaking to K24’s Tomma Kiteto and Tonny Mwirigi on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, revealed that the whole spotlight he now enjoys was never orchestrated and that he simply woke up to find that a random rendition he had made had struck a rare chord with thousands of users on the Chinese-born app.

“I have been doing content on TikTok. I am a marriage counsellor, so I have been doing content around that on TikTok and on relationships, too, and people have been liking my content. But this particular clip went viral, and I had not expected it. Actually, from the very beginning, I had not planned for it,” Ndegwa said.

The particular clip, which involved him singing in a sweet and tuneful voice about his wife and how dear she is to him, saw netizens swoon over the video for its unique choral rhythm, painting the perfect picture of a sweet, grounded relationship.

However, contrary to the widespread belief that he had been desperately attempting to claw his way into the app’s stardom for years, Ndegwa clarified that such narratives are misguided and far from his reality.

He explained that he had been seated in his house when his children returned from school and demanded that he pamper them with his attention, and it was during that domestic moment that a spark of spontaneity gave birth to the viral masterpiece.

He narrated that he took his phone and began to sing to them, as he usually does, but this time, he happened to be recording, and what followed was the now-famous melody that has since captured the nation.

“It was the day the children came back from school and found me, and they wanted my attention. So I held them as usual, and as I normally do, I began to sing to them. But this time, I picked up my phone, and a small tune just came to me. So I started to sing… This is Lakishia, the firstborn of Ndegwa; this is Lavishia, the second born of Ndegwa… And that is how it moved completely, and that is what brought about all this,” he said.

According to him, he had posted the video without any expectations of it gaining traction, but by the following day, he woke up to a flurry of clicks, comments, and messages from people who were moved by his melody and voice.

Future plans

As the fame continues to swirl around him, Ndegwa also took time to address growing speculations that he, like many overnight sensations, may soon disappear from the limelight as the digital tide shifts.

He was quick to dispel those fears, stating emphatically that he plans to stay committed to the content creation journey and revealing that he intends to focus even more deliberately on producing marriage and relationship content aimed at inspiring young people.

“I would say that going forward, I would like to do more content that inspires the youth, more of them to consider marriage,” he said.

Ndegwa expressed concern over the popular narrative, especially among younger generations, that marriage is a scam — a sentiment he believes must be urgently challenged and corrected, particularly by those with practical knowledge and experience in building lasting unions.

He asserted that marriage indeed works and vowed to be the voice of reason that reminds Gen Z that love and commitment are not outdated concepts but timeless institutions worth cherishing and pursuing.

“This whole idea that marriage is a scam — I want that to vanish from the minds of Gen Zs. So expect more content from my wife and me,” Ndegwa added.
