On Monday, June 16, an Israeli air attack hit the headquarters of the Iranian National Broadcasting Corporation in central Tehran, disrupting direct programs and exacerbating tensions between the two rival nations.
According to The New York Times, the Israeli army claimed the target was a “communications center” used by the Iranian army under the guise of civilian media.
How did Israel attack Iran’s National Broadcasting Corporation?
The strike occurred when presenter Sahar Emami was reading the news. The audience looked at the studio being shaken vigorously, the mirrors were broken and the screams were heard in the background.
Emami left his table quickly and escaped, his response was announced directly until the smoke and the fallen debris consumed the screen.
Pictures of the event were rapidly circulating online, showing flames and heavy black smoke rising from one of the buildings of the Broadcasting Corporation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRIB).
The Iranian government news agency IRNA confirmed the strike, saying it took place during a direct period but revealed that the broadcast resumed after a short interruption.
Earlier reports indicated that workers had escaped without injury, but IRIB’s deputy director Hassan Abedini later revealed that several workers had been injured. However, he did not give a specific number.
Emergency services, including firefighters, responded to preventing the fire, which destroyed part of the IRIB building.
The strike seemed to affect only one of the many buildings used by the Broadcasting Corporation in the Central Tehran district.
Did Israel warn the residents before the attack?
Earlier on that day, Israeli Defense Minister Katz had issued a warning, saying that “Iran’s propaganda and incitement is about to disappear.”
A couple of hours later, the Israeli army advised civilians near the broadcasting station before the strike was called military infrastructure.
Witness videos, including the live flow of fellow broadcaster Elham Abidini, showed the outcome of the mess. In the picture, people ran into smoke -filled corridors screaming as the rubble spread to the ground.
IRIB is widely considered as the main propaganda instrument of the Iranian government and has been criticized by international observers for suppressing opposition voice.
Iran occupies the world’s lowest position for freedom of the press, and journalists are often faced with arrest and prosecution for protesting the government’s story.
In recent times, missile operations have spread across Iran, with Israel claiming that it now has a “complete atmosphere” on the Islamic Republic.
