The late Albert Ojwang’s father, Meshack Opiyo Ojwang, has revealed that he received a phone call from President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to eulogise with his family following his son’s tragic death.

Speaking on Monday, June 16, 2025, in Lida Village, Homa Bay County, Meshack expressed his gratitude for the president’s bold move in reaching out to him directly with a condolence message during such a difficult time.

He went on to state that many people in the country have lost their children and loved ones in similar circumstances to Albert’s, yet they have never received a call from the Head of State.

He described the gesture as a rare and meaningful opportunity, thanking the president for treating Albert as though he were his own son.

He also mentioned that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, despite being out of the country, took time to call and speak with him, offering his condolences.

In addition, Meshack noted that Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga had also called him on several occasions and continued to check on him regularly, even during his stay in Nairobi while seeking answers regarding his son’s death. He appreciated her visits to their home and her consistent concern.

Meshack further acknowledged the support of the area MP, Eve Obara, who has been by his side during the mourning period, constantly checking on him and offering help where needed.

Ruto’s official statement on Albert’s death

This comes days after Ruto’s statement on his official X account on Wednesday, June 11, 2025; the president condemned the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death, describing it as both “heartbreaking and unacceptable”.

“I take this moment to extend my heartfelt condolences to Meshack Ojwang’ and his family for the cruel loss of their beloved son,” President Ruto said.

Ojwang’s death, which occurred while he was being held by police, has led to public outcry and calls for accountability. President Ruto echoed these sentiments, calling on the National Police Service (NPS) to act decisively and transparently.

“The Service must therefore rise to the challenge of firmly dealing with crime and lawlessness while also eradicating misconduct and unprofessional behaviour within its own ranks,” he stated, underscoring the need for institutional reform and integrity within law enforcement.

The president urged the police to work closely with oversight bodies in ensuring justice is delivered.

“The National Police Service must fully cooperate with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and take every necessary measure to facilitate a swift, transparent, and credible investigation into the death of Ojwang,” he said.
