Will the President of Zambia be allowed at Lungu’s funeral?

According to a family spokesman, Lungu issued a strong decree that his successor, the current President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, should not be allowed anywhere near his body.

TVC reported that these were recent events in a serious dispute over the funeral arrangements of the late Lungu.

The Zambian government was expected to transport Lungu’s body from South Africa on Wednesday, June 11, but failed to do so.

This was fueled by a long -standing conflict between Lungu’s family and his political party, Patriotic Front, about funeral arrangements.

The late Lungu and Hichilema were political rivals for a long time. Hichilema defeated Lungu in the 2021 general election after failing in his previous five trials.

Addressing the people of Zambia on Thursday evening, June 12, the President did not publicly announce Lungu’s final demands but aimed at calling for peace, love and unity.

This comes approximately a week after Lungu passed away while undergoing special treatment in South Africa. Lungu died at the age of 68.

The deceased served as President of Zambia for six years from 2015 to 2021. He took over the post following the death of his predecessor, Michael Sata.

He was defeated by Hichilema in 2021, but did not give up. He returned in 2023, seeking to fight for the most wished seat.

However, his dream of returning to the presidency was interrupted after Zambia’s constitutional court announced that he had no qualification for another term.
