Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has vouched for the reputation of James Mukhwana, the Central Police Station constable facing murder charges for the death of Albert Ojwang.

In a statement shared via his X page on Friday, June 13, 2025, the MP recounted a past encounter with Mukhwana while he was a guest of the state at the police station.

Salasya, who referred to the cop as a good officer, praised him for his professionalism and regard for humanity.

Good officer

“PC Mukhwana, my brother from Malava, you took good care of me during my three-day stay at Nairobi Central Police Station. You even introduced me to your colleagues, PC Kimani and PC Kiprotich, who, like you, demonstrated professionalism and humanity in your duty.

“I observed your conduct, and I say without fear, you are a good officer,” part of the statement from the MP read.

The constable was arraigned in court on Friday, June 13, 2025, to face murder charges for the death of the slain social media influencer that occurred on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

The development has sparked mixed reactions, with some sensing foul play and a potential cover-up aimed at shielding top officials in the police hierarchy from accountability.

The legislator has challenged the officer to take a stand for the truth and not to be the sacrificial lamb for another person.

“Now, my brother, you were on duty the day the bold spirit of Albert Ojwang was taken from us. I say to you: do not allow yourself to be the sacrificial lamb. Kenya is a nation built on the rule of law, not on scapegoats and silence. I expect you to stand tall on Monday and speak the truth before the court. Justice demands it. History is watching. And most importantly, your conscience will forever remember the choice you make,” he said.

Among those who have spoken on Mukhwana’s arraignment is former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Nelson Havi.

The lawyer faulted the prosecution of a junior police officer as the beginning of a cover-up intended to shield senior officials involved in the incident.

Havi described the prosecution as a tactical distraction meant to protect those higher up in the police chain of command.

“This is the beginning of another cover-up through the court process,” Havi said via X (formerly Twitter).

“The court should free this framed poor man pronto and direct the ODPP and IPOA to present Lagat, Talam, Sigei et al. in court for plea taking.”

Havi’s comments mirror public concerns over accountability in high-profile cases of police misconduct.

Critics have questioned why only a junior officer has been arrested while senior officers, including the Deputy Inspector General, whose complaint allegedly triggered Ojwang’s arrest, remain
