One arrested as police recover 240 litres of chang’aa in Nandi

One person was arrested on Thursday, June 12, 2025, and 240 litres of chang’aa were seized in Nandi following a targeted police operation.

The National Police Service (NPS) in a statement issued via social media on the night of Thursday, June 12, said that the operation was conducted by police officers from Kapsabet Police Station, in collaboration with National Government Administration Officers (NGAO).

The operation that was conducted in the Surungai area of Nandi County led to the arrest of the person of interest after he was found in possession of 240 litres of chang’aa concealed in a 50kg blue sack.

“Earlier today, 12 June 2025, police officers from Kapsabet Police Station, in collaboration with National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), conducted a targeted operation in the Surungai area of Nandi County. During the operation, officers arrested one suspect found in possession of 240 litres of chang’aa concealed in a 50kg blue sack,” NPS stated.

According to NPS, the person of interest was taken into custody at Kapsabet Police Station, awaiting his arraignment in court.

“The suspect was taken to Kapsabet Police Station for processing, pending arraignment in court. The National Police Service reiterates its unwavering commitment to working closely with other government agencies in ongoing efforts to eradicate illicit brew,” the statement read.

Fight against illicit brews

The Nandi County operation comes days after police confiscated over 12,000 litres of illicit brews following a multi-agency crackdown in Kisii County.

The NPS, in a statement issued via social media on Friday, June 6, 2025, said that 12,550 litres of Kangara and 70 litres of Chang’aa had been seized during the operation conducted in Bomaina Sub-Location, Kisii South Sub-County.

“A multi-agency team comprising officers from the National Police Service and the National Government Administration Officers today conducted a successful operation in Bomaina Sub-Location, Kisii South Sub-County, seizing approximately 12,550 litres of Kangara and 70 litres of Chang’aa,” the statement read in part.

Homes targeted

The operation targeted two residential homesteads in the Riotachi and Motonto areas, where authorities uncovered the illicit brews hidden in large barrels.

The NPS, alongside National Government Administration Officers, spearheaded the crackdown, with Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui and Kisii South Sub-County Police Commander Inviolata Lumati leading the charge.
