William Ruto appoints Chairman, 6 commissioners to serve for 6 years in the IEBC

Nairobi – President William Ruto He has officially appointed Erastus Edung Ethekon as the new chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), to mark the key time for the future of Kenya.

The nomination, which was announced through newspaper notifications No. 7724 and 7725 on Monday, June 10, 2025, will make Ethekon serve on an unbearable period of six years, as set out under section 250 (2) of the Constitution and the Act of IEBC.

In the same notice, Ruto also mentioned six new commissioners to join Ethekon in the steering wheel of the Election Agency. The newly nominated are Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah. Each will serve for six years.

The change has come to light when the IEBC commission is under pressure to restore public confidence and prepare for the 2027 general elections. The new team is expected to lead reforms aimed at increasing transparency, efficiency and trust in Kenya’s electoral processes.

Court circles about the appointment

However, the appointment follows the legal tension that has led to the temporary termination of the swearing -in of the nominees. The dispute was based on a request submitted by activists Boniface Mwangi And Kelvin Roy Omondi, who questioned the transparency and involvement of the tournament.

Judge Lawrence Mugambi, who listened to the case, allowed Parliament to proceed and filter the proposed ones but issued a conservative directive to prevent the announcement of the State Gazette and their swearing -in to await the Constitution.

The judge emphasized that the case raised constitutional issues affecting public involvement, the representation of marginalized groups, and the freedom of the people.

He sent the counsel to the Chief Justice Martha Koome For the formation of a court hearing and the hearing on the case on June 23.
