The secretary of the cabinet Kipchumba MurkomenInspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and the Chairman of the Independent Police Management Authority (IPOA) Isaack Hassan are expected to face the relevant committees in the Senate and the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 11.
The three, in their positions, are expected to explain the situation that Albert Ojwang, a social network user, died at Nairobi Police Station shortly after being detained.
Ojwang was arrested at Homa Bay on Friday, June 6, and taken to Nairobi, where he died less than two days later.
Western Narok MP, Gabriel Tongoyo, who is the Chairman of the National Committee of the Department of Administration and Security in the National Assembly informed Parliament that the committee had contacted the IG and the IPOA chairman to highlight Ojwang’s issue.
I want to convince Kenyans in this house, that we are all disturbed, and this morning we had already written, of course, that the clerk has even signed a letter calling IG, and IPOA reporting to the Committee on behalf of this Assembly, about what has happened, and the investigation update, so that by Thursday afternoon, I will be able to report at least the previous report. If possible, members who raised issues here may also appear, and of course join the committee, because the chiefs must join, ”Tongoyo told Parliament on Tuesday, June 10.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula called on the committee not to be gentle when dealing with the issue and instead ask difficult questions to the leaders.
“I urge you not to wait for you to give you information, I urge you to interview them,” the Speaker made his comments.
Elsewhere, Senator Crystal Asige revealed that Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has approved the call of the three.
They are expected to join between the two houses to respond to Ojwang’s death issues.
“Through the Speaker of the Senate, we have called the Minister of the Interior, Inspector General and the IPOA Chairman to appear before the Senate tomorrow morning, Wednesday, June 11, 9:30 am,” Asige said.
