The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) interim deputy party leader, Cleophas Malala, has accused police officers in Kakamega of assaulting his driver.
In a statement on social media on Monday, June 9, 2025, Malala accused officers of trailing his vehicle and launching a violent assault on the driver after discovering Malala himself was not on board.
“They trailed my vehicle and forced my driver to stop. Disappointingly, upon confirming I was not on board, they commanded him to drive to an unknown destination. When he refused, they assaulted him so severely using a gun pointer that he was left profusely bleeding.”
According to Malala, the officers not only denied his driver immediate medical attention but also unlawfully detained him for several hours at Kakamega Central Police Station. It was only after this that he was taken under armed escort to Kakamega General Hospital for treatment.
“Instead of permitting medical aid, they detained him at Kakamega Central Police Station for hours. Only after this unlawful detention was he escorted by armed officers to Kakamega General Hospital for treatment,” he lamented.
Further, Malala claims that the officers attempted to destroy evidence by tampering with his driver’s phone to erase photos taken during the incident, an attempt that failed.
“Shockingly, they attempted to destroy pictorial evidence on his phone, a crude attempt to conceal their actions, to no avail of success,” he added.
He affirmed that the matter will not be left to rest quietly, revealing that a formal complaint is being lodged with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
Malala’s remarks on 2027 elections
This comes a few days after Malala stated that President William Ruto will not rig the 2027 general elections.
He made the remarks during a stopover in Voi, Taita Taveta County, during a tour by DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua and his Wiper Party counterpart, Kalonzo Musyoka, in the coastal region on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

Addressing the crowd, he stated that those who helped the head of state win the 2022 general elections have united, and no single vote will be stolen.
“I was the Secretary General in Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party; Gachagua was deputy party leader. When we tell you this person (President William Ruto) is a thief, believe us, he is. We know him in and out,” he stated.
“He is trying to threaten Kenyans that he will steal votes. We want to tell you that those people who helped you steal that election are now here (DCP). There’s not a single vote he will steal. We have united,” he added.
